BeMobile Smart is about fusion…..the fusion of telecommunications and transportation. We use metaphors from transportation to describe our time on the Internet … we need ‘guardrails’ to stop outbursts and ‘speed limits’ to control scrolling. In cars, we use the language of smartphones- we navigate visually, but are prone to distraction, and sometimes drive on auto-pilot. When it comes to the electric car, the fusion is nearly complete.

  • Telcom networks are designed for 99% uptime. Public Electrical Vehicle (EV) charging needs to model this rate.
  • Lithium batteries power both phones and cars. Cars need to go further on their charge, just like phones.
  • Connection to the broadband network is essential for phones, useful for the EV.
  • Phones are essential in cars for traffic navigation and wayfaring.
  • Cars are useful as private places to take calls, scroll, and text.
  • Phones and cars are complements.

ABOUT JANE GOULD, PhD

I started the DearSmartphone column in 2018. It is a traditional advice column with a modern twist. Readers discuss digital issues and the problems they present.

Be Mobile Smart continues in the DearSmartphone tradition. It drills down on the unique ways that our mobile devices channel our behaviors and collective intelligence. Be Mobile Smart is my personal calling as I have been a researcher in both the transportation field and communications. Feel free to read more about me.
